Hong Kong offers friendly environment for hedge funds

Hong Kong offers a friendly environment from a regulatory and tax perspective, Asia-focused hedge fund managers who participated in the latest Opalesque Hong Kong Roundtable, sponsored by Eurex and SunGard said.

George Castrounis co-founder of the $300m volatility trading-focused hedge fund Maple Leaf Capital commented that Hong Kong and Singapore are usually the two candidates that come on everybodys shortlist when it comes to opening an Asian office. But from Maple Leafs perspective, Castrounis said that Hong Kong offers a distinct advantage compared with Singapore because more fresh trading related talents come from the former British colony.

He said, "A final note is that when you work in Hong Kong, it is almost like you are living and working on campus. Your office, your flat, your gym, the restaurant you are going to that night are all within a five minute radius. As I said, trading global markets means you end up working during most of the awake hours and it is highly functional if there is very little down time in-between all those other activities. It's a highly efficient working environment."
